Use this tool for planning, then check the exact product label, site measurements and project requirements before buying materials or starting work.
How to use this calculator
Measure room perimeter and wall height, then enter the number of ordinary doors and windows. Use the usable coverage per roll from the wallpaper manufacturer rather than relying on nominal roll area. The tool subtracts a simple opening allowance, applies waste and divides by roll coverage. Pattern repeat and drop length are especially important with wallpaper, so the result is best treated as a planning baseline.
Formula and calculation method
Gross wall area = perimeter × wall height. Estimated openings are subtracted, then waste is added. Estimated rolls = adjusted wall area ÷ usable coverage per roll, rounded upward. For patterned wallpaper, usable coverage can be lower than the geometric area printed for a roll because each drop may need extra length to align the pattern.
Worked example
A 44 ft perimeter with 8 ft walls gives 352 ft² gross area. After ordinary opening deductions, suppose 302 ft² remains. Adding 10% gives about 332 ft². At a usable 56 ft² per roll, the arithmetic estimate rounds to 6 rolls. A large repeat may push the real requirement higher.
Before you measure
Record room perimeter, wall height and any walls that will not be papered. Note sloped ceilings, half-height sections and unusually large openings separately. With patterned wallpaper, find the pattern repeat and match type on the product information before treating nominal roll area as usable coverage.
Wallpaper is commonly planned by full drops rather than by pure square area. A roll can have enough nominal area but still produce fewer usable drops because each strip must span the wall and align with the pattern. When the manufacturer provides a coverage or roll estimator for the exact product, compare it with this area-based baseline.
Before you order rolls
Round to whole rolls and check batch or dye-lot information when applicable. Consider whether future repair stock is useful, but keep that separate from installation waste. If you are using a mural, panel set or specialty wall covering, follow its panel layout rather than this general roll calculation.
Result verification checklist
Before acting on the estimate, do a short second-pass review:
- Confirm the room height against the drop length needed for the actual wallpaper.
- Use usable roll coverage or manufacturer pattern information where available.
- Check batch and pattern details before treating the final roll count as a purchase list.
If one of those checks changes an input, recalculate from the measurements rather than adjusting the final number by memory. A repeatable estimate is easier to audit and update.
Important limitations
Measurements taken from plans, listings or memory can differ from finished conditions. Manufacturers may state coverage, yield, package size or installation rules differently. The tool does not inspect your site, confirm building code, evaluate structural conditions or replace trade-specific advice. If a project involves structural, electrical, gas, roof-access or other high-risk work, use an appropriately qualified professional.
Common mistakes
- Using nominal roll dimensions instead of usable coverage.
- Ignoring pattern repeat.
- Subtracting every tiny opening even though offcuts may not be reusable.
- Ordering different batches without checking color consistency.
Frequently asked questions
Are the results exact?
No. HomeFix Tools provides planning estimates from the measurements and assumptions you enter. Product specifications, site conditions and installation choices can change actual quantities.
Does HomeFix Tools sell materials or services?
No. The calculators are independent planning utilities and do not require an account or purchase.
Should I round measurements?
Keep reasonable precision while measuring and round the final purchasing quantity according to how the material is actually sold.
